A Great Start in Tampa
Financial Planner Will Cyrus’ journey from campus to corporate office was easier than most. Cyrus graduated with more than five job offers from local businesses, and eventually started working at Sherwin Williams. The opportunity to work for a Fortune 500 company ended up paying more than a generous salary.
Cyrus’ store recorded $2 Million in sales and ranked No. 1 in district for debt collection write offs. Less than three years out of college, everything in Cyrus’ career was going well.
“I had the perfect career, perfect situation in management,” he said. “But then I got greedy.”
A Greedy Move Leads to Job Loss
Cyrus left his job at Sherwin Williams to take a sales job with a six-figure salary. He thought his future was becoming more stable until the company called him in for an unexpected meeting. Despite Cyrus’ great sales, the company predicted Cyrus’ role might change. The company fired him just three months after being hired.
“I never thought in a million years that I could be fired,” he said. “Losing that job was the first job that changed my mindset.”
A Fresh Start in Dallas
Cyrus took a chance on a new opportunity and moved to Dallas, Texas. He joined Fidelity as a Brokerage Associate, and started working toward his new career goal of owning a financial firm. After a year at Fidelity, Cyrus opened his own practice under Northwestern Mutual. From his new Dallas mentors, Cyrus learned more about the long journey it takes to build a career.
“I had to understand that it’s a process—nothing happens overnight. My first month in the business, it sucked. But I stayed humble, I stayed hungry… and once I did that the money started to roll in.”
Cyrus sees his new career in finance as a way to uplift his community. Growing up in Pompano Beach, Florida, Cyrus lived in a neighborhood where the median household income was less than $20,000 a year. In his new job, Cyrus now makes enough to give back to his neighborhood and help other families in need. Every day, Cyrus says he’s lucky.
“I wake up every day saying, ‘I’m going to change the world.’ I’m going to say you can can make it from Pompano Beach, Florida and be anything that you’ve been called to be. And that’s just my drive in this business— to inspire the world that inspired me.”
