In October, Forty Magazine co-hosted a pop-up shop for luxury perfumer Michel Germain. So much of our platform is focused on life at the office, it’s important to prioritize life outside the office too.
Hosting duties for the pop-up shop at Macy’s Northpark included a Q&A session with a Michel Germain Account Executive, who represents the brand in multiple states. She shared the story of the man behind the bottle, who had to overcome a number of challenges to become a top selling brand.

Let Love Move You, Not Profit
Michel Germain started his fragrance line for his wife Norma. When Norma shared with Germain she couldn’t find a fragrance that made her feel like “the only woman in the world,” he immediately went to work. It took him five years of research to find the scents and oils needed to make a fragrance his wife loved. But his love for his wife eventually made him a nice profit. Building a brand the other way around just doesn’t work.
It Takes Time to Build A Brand
The success Germain can claim today didn’t happen overnight. Glamour, Cosmo, and Maxim didn’t always boast the fragrance in their magazines. Celebrities like Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, and Shemar Moore weren’t always big supporters. Building the brand we recognize in Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Sears Mexico today took close to 25 years of hard work. If you really want to see success, keep following your love.
You Don’t Need a Lot to Impact
Nobody likes standing next to the guy in the elevator who is doused in perfume. The best way to apply perfume is to spray a small amount to your wrists, elbows, and behind the ear. When you’re trying to get close to someone, spraying these spots can make a large impact. When you’re building a career, the same rule applies. To get a new job, you don’t need to introduce yourself to every manager you meet. Focus on those who make an impact and your career will go far.
You Must Travel to Grow
Raised in Quebec City, Germain started his career as an electronic engineering technologist in Canada. Instead of just staying close to home, he traveled to grow his brand. During his early years of research, he traveled to France to learn more about romance, aphrodisiacs and floral scents. What he returned home with was the recipe for Sexual classic. If you want to grow in the same field or a new one, you have to get outside of your physical comfort zone.
Watch For Trends
In a highly competitive market, Germain had to pay attention to beauty / consumer trends to keep his fragrance line healthy. After bringing Norma’s fragrance to the market, he grew the line to include a series of scents for all women. When male interest in beauty grew, he created a men’s fragrance line.
